Car won't start: what the sound tells you
"It won't start" covers at least five different faults. The single most useful piece of information is what the car does when you turn the key, because each behaviour points at a different part of the system.
Work through the behaviour that matches yours, and check connections before buying anything.
Common symptoms
- Nothing at all — no lights, no click
- A single loud click, or rapid clicking, but the engine does not turn
- The engine turns over slowly and will not catch
- The engine turns over normally but never fires
- It starts and then immediately stalls
- It starts sometimes and not others
Simple checks you can do safely
- 1
Check the battery terminals and earth straps
With the ignition off, look for loose, corroded or greasy terminals and a corroded earth strap between engine and body. A poor connection mimics a dead battery and a failed starter. Wear eye protection and keep tools away from anything that bridges the terminals.
- 2
Watch the dashboard lights as you crank
Lights that stay bright with no crank suggest a starter, ignition switch or interlock problem. Lights that dim heavily or go out suggest a battery or connection problem.
- 3
Try the selector or clutch interlock
On an automatic, try starting in Neutral as well as Park. On a manual, press the clutch fully. A worn interlock switch stops a perfectly healthy car from cranking.
- 4
Check fuses, relays and the immobiliser
Look for a blown fuse or a starter relay you can swap with an identical one. A flashing security light on the dash, or a spare key that works when the usual key does not, points at the immobiliser or key rather than the engine.
- 5
Note whether it cranks but never fires
Normal cranking with no start moves attention to fuel or spark rather than the battery and starter. Check the fuel level gauge is actually correct before anything else.
Do not buy or replace parts until the fault is confirmed, and never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Warning signs: do not drive
- You can smell fuel strongly while trying to start — stop and do not keep cranking
- There is smoke, burning smell or unusual heat from the battery or wiring
- On a hybrid or electric car, any visible damage to orange high-voltage cabling — keep away and call a professional
AutoFix AI splits no-start faults by exactly this behaviour and puts terminals, earths, fuses, relays and interlocks ahead of expensive parts.
Common questions
Why won't my car start?
The behaviour tells you the area. No lights and no click points at the battery or its connections; a single click with bright lights points at the starter circuit or an interlock; slow cranking points at the battery, connections or earths; normal cranking that never fires moves attention to fuel or spark.
My car clicks but won't start — is it the battery or the starter?
Both can click. A quick way to separate them is watching the dashboard lights while you turn the key: heavy dimming or going dark suggests the battery or a poor connection, while lights staying bright suggests the starter circuit. Check terminals and the earth strap before buying either part.
My car cranks but won't start — what now?
Cranking at normal speed means the battery and starter are doing their job. Attention moves to fuel and spark: confirm there is actually fuel, note any immobiliser or security light, and check whether the engine fires briefly then dies.
Can a bad key stop the car starting?
Yes. If a spare key works when the usual one does not, or a security light flashes while cranking, the immobiliser or key is a far more likely suspect than the engine.
